Giants

'Skadi [Giantess] Hunting in the Mountains' by H. L. M.

Giants, or Jotunn as they were known in Old Norse, were often the villains of Norse mythology. They were evil and cruel creatures, sworn enemies to the gods. Not all of them were like the giants you often read about in other stories, though. Some were small and slippery. Some had bulging bellies and bushy beards. Some, like Njord’s wife, Skadi, were beautiful and much less violent.

The most common giants were the frost giants, descended from Ymir, but some of the stories also told of fire giants who lived in Muspelheim.
